What makes your project unique?

The organization plays a vital role in the lives of individuals in the Fargo-Moorhead area as evidenced by our 92% approval rating from our clients in 2009. These two cities account for 90% of Any County's total Kurdish population. Our two-city service area has a rapidly growing Kurdish population, which has nearly doubled since 2000 and is expected to double again over the next two decades. Nearly 50% of our people are living below the federal poverty line, and it is estimated that cumulatively, Kurdish individuals--both bilingual and monolingual--make up an ever-growing segment of total population in our service area. We believe that this project will introduce our organization and services to an extremely underserved Kurdish population. As a result, we anticipate a rise in education about the Kurdish community, fewer individuals being stereotyped because of the Middle Eastern background, increased diversity among our communities to reflect the changing demographics of the cities we serve, and improved quality of life for those clients.

Tell us about the social impact of your project as it relates to ONE of these three areas: Education, Employment or Housing

The Kurdish Youth of America was established as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2009 by a group of young men and women youth, who saw a great need within our community in terms of education, housing and employment. The Youth wanted to create a place with the right resources for the Kurdish community. The organization addresses the education, housing and employment needs of the Kurdish population in the Fargo, ND-Moorhead, MN area. We are one of the largest communities in the Fargo-Moorhead area and serve more than 450 each year, through a wide variety of programs. Our mission is to provide resources to expand the effect of opportunity.

List any specific activities associated with the project and a timeline for the activities

Goal: Decrease racism reports in the Fargo-Moorhead area.
Objective: By the end of year one, provide 20 individuals in the Fargo-Moorhead area with a 2-hour training program that will provide information on how to educate others about our community.
In order to achieve the objectives for our Multicultural Endowment Challenge Project, the KYA will employ the methods outlined below. We have confidence in these methods, as they have been tested and proven successful by two of our fellow nonprofit organizations whose client populations are Kurdish: KAYO in Nashville, Tennessee and the KYC in Washington D.C. Representatives of both organizations served as advisers to us as we developed this project. We have also prepared a detailed timeline, which is included in the appendixes to this proposal.
Objective One
Ensure that a minimum of 20 Kurdish-speaking individuals with reports of racism complete our education classes in educating and maintaining a healthy relationship with those are unaware of who we are.

What stage is your project in?

Operating for 1‐5 years

If your project is a collaborative effort, please list the other organizations involved

In the past year, the KYA has approached several new grantmakers for support, and we are pleased to report that cities of Fargo and Moorhead are willing to support our organization with this project.

Who or what is expected to change as a result of your project?

If the project were not undertaken, low-income Fargo-Moorhead area Kurdish community are at risk for developing depression — in their own communities —education and prevention services designed to minimize their risk. Since the individuals we serve are low-income, they have limited access to similar resources that may be available in other areas.

What information will you provide in the final report to demonstrate the achievement of your results?

Currently, program facilitators administer both a pretest and a posttest to participants in order to measure what information is learned by the students during the 4 quarterly education classes. At the conclusion of each session, we also ask participating teachers to complete a detailed evaluation questionnaire so we can continue to find ways to improve an already excellent program.

What methods will be used to gather the information?

The Kurdish Youth of America Multicultural Endowment Challenge program will also regularly be evaluated by the KYA Board of Directors. Because it is our goal to teach the Kurdish community to become friends of the uneducated stereotype’s, the KYA program coordinator and others are working to develop a more sophisticated, yet practical, evaluation process in order to measure the long-term impact.

What do you hope to learn about racism and its impact?

The need for the Kurdish Youth of America Multicultural Endowment Challenge is great. The Kurdish Youth of America estimates that 20 new individuals with reports of racism are expected to occur among the Kurdish community in 2011. Of that number, 5 will be in the county of Fargo and 15 in the county of Moorhead.

What percentage do people of color comprise your board of directors?

100 %
