High school competition and interactive water quality map
| 1 Comment
Summary:
It is based on a similar large scale competition in the United Kingdom called the Global Experiment that sought to raise awareness of water quality issues.
It will challenge our future leaders (students) to employ chemisty, data collection and analysis skills as well as getting them out to interact in the community and natural environment. Identifying water sources and possible sources of water pollution, students will get a unique perspective on the interrelatedness of peoples impact on the water ecosystem. They will be able to see real time updates of the water source mapping process by the data they provide (location of water sample, nitrate levels and pH)

High school competition and interactive water quality map
Describe how you would use $15,000 to help your community become aware of and address water issues in Minnesota.
Water quality in Minnesota is affected by the presence of fertilizer, bacteria and nitrates. I would create a interactive map that displays water sources in the community and some brief data about the quality of that source. K-8 schools (7th grade class) would be given simple water testing kits and access to the internet to post their kit results. The testing could be performed in school under the guidance of a teacher, however, the students would collect the water samples. Schools with more entries that reflect the diverse water ecosystem (different creek beds, swamps, lakes, rivers) could win the competition. The 15,000 dollars would go to pay for hosting the website (30 dollars/mo), competition marketing (500 dollars), parent informational packets (500 dollars) and materials (First Alert Water Testing kits 12 dollars per kit) to supply area schools. I would enlist a designer and a programmer to donate their time to designing a a interactive website for this project.
How do you define your "community"?. How are water issues affecting your community?
I define my community as the North Mississippi Regional Park communities of North Minneapolis/Brooklyn Center Minnesota . All people and business activities eventually impact the clean water supply. North Minneapolis/Brooklyn Center is a watershed area for the Mississippi River. Farm fertilizer run off, sewage, and industrial waste water generated in the community and upstream of the community can pollute our small creeks, rivers and lakes that we enjoy in the area. They also require that expensive water cleaning facilities be built and maintained to make potable water. Reducing the amount of water and water pollution will make for a less expensive, cleaner water supply. The effect of this on our lakes, streams and rivers will be an invaluable contribution to our children's future.

Impact
Describe how how you expect your idea to make a difference in your community.
The goals of this project are to raise awareness of our local water sources as well as our state water sources and provide a framework of discussion about local vs non local impact of human activity of the overall water supply. School children are the best disseminators of all things viral! Maybe this bug - to think differently about water and our impact on a clean water supply will catch on to their parents and friends.
Sustainability and Growth
Describe how your idea will "stick" in your community and how you think it could be repeated in other communities.
This project will be able to meet its objective to challenge and educate our children on the interrelatedness of human activity and the cleanliness of our water supply and do so within its 15,000 dollar budget. This competition can be easily rolled out into other communities by updating the mapping region. The software functionality will remain the same as well as the basic chemistry supplies. Eventually, all the maps can be linked up to give a view of Minnesota's water quality.
