Summary:

This playground will be more than a waterpark filled with slides and splashes. The H2Open Play Park will provide an opportunity for children of all ages to experiment and interact with water in a way that will create appreciation and understanding for it's role in our lives. Through inquiry learning, activities in this playful environment can help us know how to better manage our precious resource.

H2Open Play

Describe how you would use $15,000 to help your community become aware of and address water issues in Minnesota.

Through inquiry and play, we can encourage children to appreciate water's power and role in our lives. In an open ended interactive playground, children of all ages can manipulate the flow of water through simulated rivers and streams to see how water moves and impacts areas along its path. They can view water samples through microscopes to identify organic and inorganic materials that it carries. Through a variety of other "playground" experiences, lessons will be learned that will impact how we view, conserve and protect our precious resource... water. This project will be constructed and maintained by children in the Robbinsdale area schools. It will be a joint effort combining expertise and curriculum from the elementary, middle and high school students.

Monies provided will be used to purchase equipment. (i.e. water pumps, water tables, magi-scope microscopes...) Labor to construct the H2Open Play Park will be donated.

How do you define your "community"?. How are water issues affecting your community?

Our community is filled with curious minds that want to make a positive impact on our society by first having the knowledge and understanding of how our world works. We provide educational experiences to children and adults to enhance their participation in providing a healthy and happy environment for all. Since our district schools either border, contain or are near bodies of water, we have proximity and awareness of flooding, drought and dependence on water. As students, we are always trying to find out how our actions impact our environment. In our scientific studies of engineering, we are cognizant of how we can affect the resources around us.

Describe how your idea will "stick" in your community and how you think it could be repeated in other communities.

From a young age, children are curious about water. They can spend hours playing with it and learning about it's properties. The motivation to come to an H2Open Play Park would be inate in most. Parents that value both playing and learning will be advocates for this type of park. In some locations, simple additions to established playgrounds near lakes or rivers would be possible and appropriate. Most local school districts have science curriculum that provides ongoing opportunities for participation in H2Open Play Park activities. The resources that are available through city watershed programs are also available for future planning, preparation and management of other H2Open Play Parks.
