Competition Winner

This entry has been selected as a winner in the
Challenge III: Working Together Across Cultures and Faiths competition.

Summary:

In the heart of North Minneapolis stands an old Mosque that once was a Church. If one listens carefully the whispers of bright ideas and excitement can be heard from hidden pearls. They call themselves the Sunnah sisters and are a group of young, dedicated Muslim women that want to bring change to their community despite all obstacles. As their president I have come up with not just an idea, but a MISSION! here it goes!
1: Training Group(leadership)week -preparing for the challenge
2:Church hopping any one?- going to different churches/Synagogues in Twin Cities speaking about diff stereotypes of muslims/ calling them to work together for common good
3:Walking a mile in my shoes health week- targeting minorities/somali/ethiopian/latino ect..addressing healthy lifestyle changes teaming up with universities to organize a community marathon walk for a healthier MN
4:Pink hijab week- passing out free hijabs(headscarf) around the twin cities letting other women of faith experience a day as an hijabi. Answering burning question on why musliim women wear the hijab and also comparing diff dress codes across diff religions.(fashion show at Saint Catherine University with the sisters of Saint Joseph)
5:Open house(Mosque) Day
6:Save a school save a community week- invite community members/leaders of different religious groups to North High school dialogue on what we can do as a community to make education priority in a neighborhood like north MPLS and Cedar/stop gang violence/drug addiction/lower drop out rates(work with Project success)
7:Start a daily/weekly show for youth by youth of all the issues i have mentioned thus far at local television station(MTN)
-This challenge will only be the beginning for this group if accomplished we will make long term goals on sustaining our success through out the year. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." –Margaret Mead

Title

HIdden Pearls seven step Summer Challenge

What is your best idea to build bonds and work together across cultures and faiths in your community?

In the heart of North Minneapolis stands an old Mosque that once was a Church. If one listens carefully the whispers of bright ideas and excitement can be heard from hidden pearls. They call themselves the Sunnah sisters and are a group of young, dedicated Muslim women that want to bring change to their community despite all obstacles. Impact and Sustainability

How will your idea have a positive impact on your community?

Simple, We are already making an impact in our community, but its small at this moment because we are lacking the resources to do what we really want to do! If we get this 15,000 that will give us exactly what we need. When I first started this group I understood that ideas are less then half of what is needed to really make an impact in our community. MANY have ideas but very few put it into action. The first step to the Seven-step challenge is taking these girls and empowering them to become leaders! They have so much to offer in a community like North Minneapolis Giving them a voice to share what they have to say because they truly are hidden pearls. My idea tackles two main problems that I have seen. The twin cities might be diverse but we are also segregated. Because our problems are diverse to make an impact we will need different Methods. That is why it is the SEVEN STEP CHALLENGE!

What do you think the lasting effect will be if your idea is implemented?

The lasting effect of this idea is this group! A group of young, Muslim women working across cultures, breaking stereotypes and empowering others to do the same. Our seven-step challenge for this summer is only the beginning! More like an introduction to long-term goals for this Community. Innovation? The name says it all!
