Summary:
IYLS seeks to inspire and motivate youth, give them the tools to put ideas into action and help bring the next generation of leaders on the forefront of these important issues- ones that their generation will inherit.
Minnesota is facing tremendous challenges integrating historically underrepresented groups and providing them with a nurturing, respectful and welcoming environment- effectively jeopardizing efforts to build a better society for everyone.
CAIR-MN, the state’s only Muslim civil rights organization, along with interfaith and civil rights partners, seeks to empower underrepresented youth and give them the resources and opportunities they need to fulfill their aspirations and give their communities a voice.
The IYLS is a leadership and empowerment conference filled with engaging workshops and activities. A committee of college and high school youth will offer more insight into the program.
IYLS will include networking and career exploration to encourage youth to enter fields where they will have opportunities and skills to shape public opinion and public policy. It will motivate them not only to become politically and civically engaged, but also to help them pursue professions that will positively impact the broader society.
Students will be educated on civic engagement, civil rights, public speaking and communications, and trained on leadership and community advocacy skills. They will be able to network with elected officials, media professionals, community activists and leaders. Youth will learn from each other and their community’s shared civil rights experiences.
After receiving the training, youth will commit to a project that seeks to builds bonds and work together across cultures and faiths. Youth will be placed in internship programs with interfaith and civil rights organizations already working on these issues.
