Summary:

Arts in Action and Youthrive will partner to create Youthrive's idea of "The Drama Bus." Arts in Action's vision is a world where all people have access to the arts for expression through empowered communities free from interpersonal trauma. Creative Arts Therapists partner with community artists and organizations to address trauma and promote healing through the arts. Youthrive's purpose is to inspire and engage youth and adults through education, leadership, and service to integrate peace-making activities into their lives, their communities, and the world. Together, these two organizations will create...The Drama Bus! The Drama Bus will perform "Drama-bys' to replace Drive-bys. Rather than random acts of violence, Drama-bys will consist of a diverse ensemble of performers piling off of the Drama Bus and sharing enactments bridging different cultures and faiths and bringing a message of peaceful resolution and tools to end violence in communities. The Drama Bus will travel around the State of Minnesota, performing Drama-bys in neighborhoods, at festivals and on main streets. The Drama Bus Project will also organize with community leaders to host neighborhood performances and talk-back sessions to address community violence and ideas to promote peace-making. Community members will be able to share their stories, concerns, dreams and visions related to ending violence and increasing positive dialogue across all ages, cultures, ethnicities and faiths. Playback Theater and Theater of the Oppressed techniques will be employed to empower communities through drama and enactment, building empathy and bonds between groups that previously were distantly co-existing. The Drama Bus will also distribute print resources containing tools, contacts and steps to end violence in communities across Minnesota. The Drama Bus project would be easily replicated and expanded.

The Drama Bus: Stop for Drama. End Trauma.

What is your best idea to build bonds and work together across cultures and faiths in your community?

Impact and Sustainability

How will your idea have a positive impact on your community?

The Drama Bus brings positive and sustainable impact directly to the communities it hopes to engage. Public space performance dismantles traditional barriers to audience access and involvement. Instead of issues of culture, faith and diversity being relegated to certain spaces, the Drama Bus brings a space where all voices can be heard. All members of our society will be impacted as they travel through their daily lives. Victims and perpetrators of violence will be reached as well as bystanders and potential allies. Traditionally, the topic of violence is hidden, secret, shameful. The Drama Bus offers a clear model for community members to engage directly in prevention and intervention to end violence—one of the greatest barriers to open and free communication across cultures and faiths. The Positive impact of the Drama Bus project will be achieved with a focused vision on both breadth and depth of community engagement. The breadth will consist of the sheer number of Minnesotans impacted by the touring element of this initiative. The depth of impact will be accomplished through planning meetings with community leaders; public street theater "Drama-bys"; and talk-back gatherings where members will engage performatively with the gestalt of violence and myriad of strengths unique to their community. Audience members will be asked to share stories, hopes and concerns about violence including current barriers for dialogue between cultures and faiths. They will be engaged in the role-play as participants in embodied action and discourse. Resource materials will be provided including tools to employ daily for prevention, intervention and sustained dialogue. Communities who are interested will be mentored in implementing the Drama Bus model in their area. The Drama Bus offers concrete tools for positive impact in communities and creates a safe rehearsal space for growth, practice and dialogue that honors diversity.

What do you think the lasting effect will be if your idea is implemented?

Youthrive and Arts in Action will implement the Drama Bus project with the allotted funds of 15,000 dollars and sustain its existence through donations and grant funding from community members, businesses, organizations, foundations, and county, state and federal justice and violence prevention programs. Both organizations are based in the community of Minneapolis, and both have a network of diverse and passionately community-driven supporters. Both are involved in the statewide MN Alliance Against Violence, a coalition of over 100 organizations. Membership includes those who hail from both rural and urban areas of Minnesota. Arts in Action is fiscally sponsored by Springboard for the Arts. The allotted 15,000 dollars will fund the project, including material fees (i.e. use of vehicle for transportation through donation, rental or discounted purchase and printing of resource materials), performance fees (including stipend for the youth involved in the project), mileage/gas/insurance fees, and project coordination fees. Sustainability of the project in terms of facilitator/performers will be achieved by training performers and ambassadors, who in turn will continue as trainers for new members, community leaders and allies. The Drama Bus model could easily be replicated and expanded in communities across Minnesota and the country adding to the lasting effect of its implementation. Interested communities and youth organizations will be given training and assistance in outlining a framework to commence this project in their own area. A possible example of this capacity for replication and expansion could be Drama to End Trauma workshops in performance art, community building skills, and grant writing for sustainability and growth.
