Achieving Success

Summary:

4 Lutheran adults (1 man, 3 women) and 2 Somali women have been meeting together for a year and a half to address the educational needs of students who live in our community. Based on research (academic and parental assessment of student needs), we have determined to focus on reading skills for the children in grade 3 and earlier (ensuring that all kids have learned to read before exiting 3rd grade) and focus on math skills for grades 4 and beyond.

We are in the early stages of building a replicable program to connect community volunteers with students while they are at school; we will strengthen the skills that need to be strengthened and set all kids up to achieve their full potential.

Our community cares deeply about our kids. We know that we have many volunteers just waiting to be made aware of this opportunity. We have the community connections to successfully recruit volunteers. Funding would go towards costs associated with training and supporting our volunteers and supply costs associated with the actual tutoring programs.
